A cold house makes people reach for the phone fast — understandably. But a meaningful share of “my heat doesn't work” calls end with a flipped switch or fresh batteries, so run this sequence first. Five minutes, in order, no tools required.
The six checks, in order
1. Thermostat. Confirm it's set to HEAT (not OFF or COOL), the set temperature is above the room temperature, and — the classic — the batteries aren't dead. A blank or frozen screen is your answer.
2. The breaker. Find the furnace circuit in your electrical panel. If it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop — that's an electrical fault that needs a professional, not a third try.
3. The furnace switch. Most systems have a light-switch-style shutoff on or near the unit, and it gets bumped more often than anyone admits — especially after basement projects or holiday-box season.
4. The filter. Pull it and hold it to the light. If you can't see light through it, the furnace may be overheating and shutting itself down for safety. Swap it and give the system fifteen minutes.
5. Gas supply. Confirm the gas valve at the furnace is parallel to the pipe (open), and — if other gas appliances exist — that they work, which rules out a supply issue.
6. Vents and registers. Make sure supply registers are open and unblocked, and that the outside intake/exhaust pipes (on high-efficiency units) aren't blocked by snow, leaves, or a well-meaning shrub.
Two situations where you stop and leave
If you smell gas at any point, or a carbon monoxide detector sounds, do not troubleshoot, do not relight anything, do not flip switches. Get everyone out, then call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Those are the two no-heat scenarios where the house waits and people don't.
Still cold? Now it's our turn
If the sequence didn't bring the heat back, the likely culprits — ignitor, flame sensor, blower motor, control board — need a licensed technician. No-heat calls get priority scheduling at Pacific Air across our North Jersey service area, from our Clifton shop through Passaic, Bergen, Essex, and Morris counties, with the diagnosis explained and the repair priced in writing before any work starts.
