Belvidere's basements remember the gravity furnace.

Belvidere is the county's Victorian seat, and its houses are old enough to carry mechanical archaeology: many were first heated by gravity furnaces, and the enormous ducts those systems needed are still in the walls.

Converting what gravity left behind.

A gravity furnace moved air with no blower at all — just heat rising through ducts the size of barrels — and when those systems were replaced over the decades, the new equipment was usually grafted onto the old octopus of ductwork. The graft works badly: oversized trunks kill the velocity modern systems need, ancient joints leak into the basement, and rooms at the ends of the old runs never get their share. Our Belvidere conversions finish the job the century started — the usable original paths kept and sealed, the hopeless ones replaced with properly sized runs fabricated in our Clifton shop, and the airflow finally matched to the house instead of to 1905.

The county seat's practice.

Around the conversions runs the town's standing work: boiler and radiator service for the houses that stayed hydronic, cooling added to Victorian frames by the established no-demolition methods, and service for the offices and storefronts around the courthouse square — all scheduled in advance from Clifton and quoted in writing after an assessment at the property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Belvidere questions, where the basements remember the gravity furnace.

Our Belvidere house has huge old ducts. Can a modern system use them?

Partially, sometimes — and the assessment maps which runs are worth keeping. Gravity-era trunks are usually too large for modern airflow, so conversions mix sealed original paths with new correctly sized runs rather than trusting the old octopus whole.

Why do our far rooms get almost no air?

In a gravity-era house, usually because the old duct layout was never designed for a blower's pressure. Air takes the easy paths and the long runs starve. Rebalancing and selective duct replacement correct it, and the proposal shows exactly which runs change.

Pacific Air also serves neighboring Oxford, Hope, and Phillipsburg.
