Park Slope, Brooklyn

A renovated Slope brownstone is two buildings wearing one address.

Park Slope's signature renovation puts a glass-and-steel kitchen extension on the back of a masonry rowhouse — and the result is a single home whose front and rear halves live in different climates.

The front is 1890. The rear is last year.

The original parlor floors sit behind thick brick and modest windows and barely notice the weather; the new rear extension is mostly glazing and feels every hour of it — solar gain pouring in by day, heat escaping through the glass on winter nights. One thermostat serving both halves guarantees that one of them is always wrong. Our Slope designs split the house along its real seam: the extension on its own zone with capacity matched to its glass, the masonry floors on gentler service, and the equipment concealed so neither era of the house has to display it.

The rest of the house, the Slope way.

Around the extension question runs the neighborhood's established practice — radiators serviced rather than regretted, cooling threaded through closets and ceilings with the plaster intact, and outdoor units kept to rear walls and roofs in keeping with the district. Projects are scheduled in advance from Clifton, with board or district documentation prepared where the property needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Park Slope questions, where the front is 1890 and the rear is last year.

Our new rear kitchen swings hot and cold while the rest of the house is fine. Why?

Because the extension is a different building — glass where the house is brick. It needs its own zone sized for its own gains and losses, and once it has one, both halves of the house behave.

Can the extension's system be invisible from the garden?

Largely, yes — concealed ducted equipment inside, and the outdoor unit placed and screened so the garden elevation keeps its lines. Placement is drawn in the proposal.

Pacific Air also serves neighboring Brooklyn Heights and Crown Heights.
